“Refined in the furnace of truth, he was a 'Mahatma'; uniting Indians and showing them the dawn of freedom, he was the 'Father of the Nation'.”

Mohandas was born to Karamchand Gandhi, a distinguished and cultured Diwan of the princely state of Porbandar. Reserved and shy as a child, the roots of truth ran deep within him. In accordance with the customs of the time, he married Kasturba at the age of thirteen. After completing his primary and secondary education in Rajkot, he travelled to London for higher education. Waging battles on three fronts—against himself, his own people and foreign rulers—he explored his inner self, worked to transform society and ultimately brought down foreign rule.

While in South Africa for a legal case, Barrister Gandhi faced humiliation; there, the lawyer within him transformed into a fighting leader. On returning to India, he abandoned the luxurious life of a suit-clad lawyer, embraced the charkha and pancha, and forged a bond with the suffering of ordinary people. Through the Champaran struggle, Non-Cooperation Movement, Salt Satyagraha and Quit India Movement, he ignited the spark of freedom among Indians. He took the freedom struggle to farmers, labourers and women in villages. To eradicate untouchability, he devoted himself to the service of the 'Harijans' (Dalits). Upholding Truth, Non-violence, Satyagraha and Sarvodaya, he advocated Swadeshi and self-reliance, restoring human values.

Amid global arms races and ruthless imperialism, Gandhiji used truth and non-violence to weaken British rule in India. He raised a non-violent wall of unarmed people against British guns, compelling them to bow before moral strength. Refined in the furnace of truth, he was a 'Mahatma'; uniting Indians and showing them the dawn of freedom, he was the 'Father of the Nation'.
