Gautama Buddha’s Hastamudra
For the past two and a half millennia, people across the world have studied and embraced the teachings of Gautama Buddha, who propagated the message of truth and non-violence. To spread his philosophy, he was depicted in literature, paintings, and sculpture. While Gautama Buddha was not initially portrayed in human form, his images began to be depicted later. Specific meanings were conveyed through the positioning of the hands in these Buddha images; these hand gestures are known as ‘Hastamudras’.
These mudras are described in texts that record various legends regarding the life of Gautama Buddha and his teachings in the form of sutras. Some of the prominent mudras among them are depicted here.
